Conquering the New GRE Verbal Reasoning Section: Part 1

Approximately 2 years ago, I visited the ETS GRE testing center for my very last time. After writing two analytical writing essays, a 30-minute verbal section, and a 45-minute quantitative section, I was prepared to see my score and hit the road. However, I got this bizarre “experimental” verbal section with questions I had never seen before. I recall muttering some inappropriate expletive after seeing a question with 6 answer choices and instructions that said “select one or more answer choices.” I was also far from thrilled to see a text completion section with 3 instead of 2 blanks. And even stranger, they wanted me to highlight my answer in the text… Say Whaaaat! Little did I know the questions I had just viewed were soon to become the NEW GRE VERBAL REASONING section.

The End and the Beginning, Part 2

The end for me.

When I graduated from college, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to be doing. I interviewed for a couple jobs, but I really just wasn’t into it (I also bombed them, but that’s another animal). I had friends who were going off to work for huge companies like Microsoft and Intel and Google, and I wondered if they just knew exactly what that was what they wanted to do or if they just snapped up whatever was offered to them without really doing any serious introspection. It seemed like such a huge decision to make, and I had absolutely no idea how they found the time to ensure that it was the right one. I went home with no job offers and no specific plan for the future.

The sunset of my youth...and the sunrise of my adulthood.

Hello all! I have been away for some time, traveling and enjoying the last few months of this chapter of my life. I’m writing now to say goodbye to any of you who still remember me and to provide some closure to my little story on this (not so little anymore!) blog. My tenure at Testmasters has come to an end (actually, it ended a little while ago), and I am now on the cusp of starting a new phase of my life — graduate school.

What is a Good Score on the New GRE?

This is what I always wanted to see on my tests!

When it comes to tests – or really grades in general – I am a perfectionist. Back in high school, even though a 91 and a 99 both counted as an A, and both benefited my GPA  by the same amount, a 99 or even a 100 was just so much prettier. Every question I missed on a test was one that I could have gotten right. And if we were ever told just our grade, without a chance to look over the tests, I was the one who would angst over which questions I might have missed.
